Best Things to Do in Hurghada

An honest local shortlist for first-time visitors. We've kept it to seven choices that consistently make travelers say their week was worth it.

Hurghada is built around a strip of hotels, a calm reef-lined coast, and a desert plateau a short drive inland. The best week mixes one island/snorkeling day, one desert day, and a slower spa or evening day. Below are the activities we recommend most often, picked from operators we work with personally.

Not the best fit if

If you only have one day and bad weather is forecast, the sea trips list will look thin - check the 'when the sea is closed' guide for indoor and desert alternatives. If you can't get out of bed before 09:00, skip the long sea trips and choose the speedboat or the stargazing safari.

1. A full day at Orange Bay Island

The classic Hurghada day: a 90-minute boat ride to a white-sand island in the Giftun archipelago, two snorkel reefs along the way, on-board lunch and shaded beach loungers. Family-friendly, calm water, easy first reef.

2. Dolphin House (Sha'ab El Erg)

A horseshoe reef where wild spinner dolphins often rest during the day. Sightings are possible but never guaranteed - no operator can promise that wild animals will show. Even without dolphins, the reef itself is one of the better snorkeling stops near Hurghada.

3. A desert safari afternoon

Quad bike across the plateau east of the city, sandboarding on a small dune, Bedouin tea in a tented camp, and either sunset or stargazing on the way back. Closed shoes and a light jacket help; the desert gets cold fast after sunset.

4. First time scuba diving

Discover Scuba Diving with a certified instructor includes a shallow training session and one supervised dive to about 12 metres. Medical declaration required; minimum age set by PADI. Plan it for the start of your trip, not the day before flying.

5. Private speedboat for half a day

Best value for groups of four or more. You pick the island, you set the schedule, and you avoid the larger boats. We have two routes: 'you choose the island' (4 hours) and a dedicated Dolphin House run (5 hours).

6. A slow spa afternoon

Most Hurghada hotels have a small spa, but quality varies. The Yala Spa partner does aromatherapy, deep tissue, Cleopatra honey scrub, Moroccan hammam, manicure, pedicure and a deep facial cleanse - all wellness services, not medical treatments, with hotel transfer included.

7. An evening that isn't a buffet

Marina walk, the El Mamsha promenade, a sunset boat hour, a stargazing safari, or a quiet spa with hotel transfer. Most travelers skip the all-inclusive buffet at least one night.

Common questions

How many activities can I fit into a week in Hurghada?

Most travelers do three to four full activity days and use the rest of the week for beach time at their hotel. Two sea days back to back is fine; we don't recommend three because the salt water gets exhausting.

What should I book first?

Book the sea trips first because they're weather-dependent. Spa and desert are easier to move at short notice.

Is it cheaper to book in Hurghada or online?

Our online price is the same as the price on the day, with free hotel transfer included. Street resellers sometimes undercut but rarely with the same operators or transfer.
