Hurghada Desert Safari Guide: What to Wear, What to Bring, What Happens at the Bedouin Camp

A Hurghada desert safari is an afternoon and evening on the plateau east of the city: quad bike across open sand, jeep convoy through dry wadis, a camel ride at a Bedouin village, and a BBQ dinner with live music under the stars. Here's exactly what to expect and what to bring.
The Hurghada desert in 60 seconds
Most travelers picture rolling Sahara dunes when they hear "desert safari." The Hurghada desert is different: a wide, flat plateau with rocky outcrops, low hills, and patches of soft sand. It runs from the Red Sea coast inland toward the Sahara proper.
Our safari base is about 40 minutes east of Hurghada. Once you're on the plateau, the only thing on the horizon is mountains. No buildings, no power lines, no light pollution. The stars at night are incredible.
The Bedouin families who run the camps with us have lived in this area for generations. The evening is part hosted dinner, part cultural exchange, they share what they cook, and you spend time around the fire.
What actually happens during the safari
The full Super Safari runs about 6 hours from hotel pickup to drop-off. The flow:
- 14:30, Hotel pickup. Air-conditioned mini-van, around 40 minutes to the safari base.
- 15:30, Quad bike briefing and ride. No driving license needed. Our team walks every group through the controls. 30-minute ride across the plateau.
- 16:30, Jeep convoy. Open-top 4x4 ride, with a stop for desert photos.
- 17:30, Camel ride at the village. Short and gentle. Even nervous first-time riders are fine.
- 18:30, Sunset. Free time. This is when most travelers take their best photos.
- 19:00, Bedouin dinner with live music. Grilled chicken or kofta, salads, rice, traditional bread baked in the sand, tea. About 90 minutes.
- 21:00, Return. Back at your hotel.
What to wear in the desert
Daytime is dry and warm, evenings cool down quickly. The right clothes make the difference between a great evening and a chilly one:
- Closed shoes. Non-negotiable for the quad bike. Sneakers or hiking shoes. Sandals are not allowed on the quad, pebbles fly up.
- Comfortable, dust-friendly clothes. The fine desert dust gets everywhere. Don't wear anything you're not happy washing afterwards.
- Long pants or jeans. Protects your legs from sun during the day and warmth in the evening.
- A long-sleeve top. Long sleeves shield from sun on the quad and from cool air after sundown.
- A light jacket or hoodie. Essential in winter months (November-March), useful even in summer evenings.
- A scarf or buff. Wrap it over your nose and mouth on the quad, saves you breathing dust. The Bedouin team can show you how if you've never worn one.
- Sunglasses. Bright daytime sun.
What to bring
- A camera or phone with full battery. Sunset over the dunes is the photo you'll send everyone.
- A small day-bag. Just enough for the jacket, scarf and camera.
- Some cash. 5-10 EUR tip for the team is generous. Bedouin handmade scarves or trinkets at the village cost about 5 EUR if you'd like a souvenir.
- Hand sanitizer and a small wet-wipe pack. Useful before dinner.
- Any prescription medication you take. The base is 40 minutes from the city.
What to leave at the hotel
- Open-toed shoes. Not allowed on the quad.
- White or fancy clothes. The dust is fine and reddish.
- Heavy bags or expensive jewelry. Nothing on the quad except a strap-on camera at most.
- Drones, unless cleared in advance. Egyptian rules around private drones are strict; we can arrange permission with our team if you want this.
What the Bedouin dinner is actually like
The dinner is held at a small camp run by a Bedouin family we work with year-round. The setting is open-air, with rugs and low tables, and a central fire. You sit on cushions on the floor, which is more comfortable than it sounds, but if you have a back issue, ask for a chair, we have a few.
The food is genuinely traditional, not a tourist menu:
- Salatat (small salads of tomato, cucumber, beetroot, beans).
- Grilled chicken or beef kofta cooked over the open fire.
- Saqaiyya bread baked in the sand, served with za'atar and olive oil.
- Rice with vermicelli.
- Karkadeh (hibiscus tea) and Bedouin sage tea, both unlimited.
- Fresh fruit for dessert.
Vegetarian and gluten-free guests can be accommodated; please tell us at booking. The kitchen team is very used to dietary requests.
During and after dinner there's live music with a tabla drum and a stringed simsimiyya, plus a quiet Tanoura dance (the spinning dervish dance) by torchlight. Nothing is loud or showy. It's a relaxed evening.
Children on a safari
The Super Safari is recommended for 12+ because of the quad bike. For families with younger children we run a "Mini Safari" version: jeep + camel + dinner only, skipping the quad. Children under 6 are free, 6-11 pay 50%. Message us if you'd like the Mini Safari schedule.
Safety
The quad route is on flat plateau, not steep dunes. Our team rides with the group at front and back, in radio contact. Speeds are moderate. The biggest real risks are:
- Wind-blown dust into the eyes, sunglasses solve this.
- Sunburn on shoulders, long sleeves solve this.
- Cool evening after a hot day, bring the jacket.
If you've never ridden a quad before, that's fine, most of our guests haven't. The briefing is thorough and the route is forgiving.
Photos worth taking
The light during a Hurghada desert safari is a photographer's gift. Two moments to be ready for:
- Golden hour on the plateau (just before sunset, when the dust catches the light). The jeep ride is timed to land here.
- Stars after dinner. Lie on the rug, look up. Phone cameras with a "night mode" can pick up the Milky Way on clear nights.
